the abstraction of a popular character like this is directly attributable to their iconic nature. the image of this character is so ingrained into our minds that any piece of them is recognizable on it's own, even without their original colours. it could be argued that there is no character at all, and it is the viewer's ability to recognize the shapes that allows them to see anything within them.
